PREVIEW - What Remains UnFugured

What Remains Unfigured: Explorations in Non-Figural Expression brings together historical and contemporary artists whose practices move beyond the figure through abstraction, landscape, still life, materiality, color, and other non-figural approaches. The exhibition considers what becomes visible when the figure is no longer treated as the primary vehicle through which Black artistic expression is understood. Rather than positioning non-figuration as a departure from the established traditions, the exhibition traces its presence across generations, placing contemporary practices in conversation with a longer history of artists working beyond representational expectations. At its core, What Remains Unfigured asks us to consider not only what remains when the figure is absent, but what aspects of Black artistic production have remained “unfigured” within the broader art-historical canon.    ~Tamara J.
